I work with simple sites on 1and 1 with a few individual clients. I have also had extensive experience with Valueweb (7 years), and switched mostly for price reasons and the ability to have multiple domains usable in one account.
So far I haven't had much bad with 1and1. This includes having to cancel one account, changing billing info on others, etc. Compared to Valueweb, email functionality has been good.
The one time I used tech support I found it weak, though. Customer service for account issues was a bit brusque when I used that at one time. I get the idea that live/phone support is not how they most want to communicate with customers, relying on online self-service methods instead. I have not had any trouble with wrong or extra billing charges so far. But one must attend to any account-based emails from them!!
Because I am not using any e-commerce (yet), I can't speak for 1and1's uptime reliability and their tools that e-commerce demands. But I am paying attention to the...

Over the last 4 years I have used the MS Shared Hosting (intially the very basic package and currently the intermidiate MS Business Package) for around £10 p month. I have set up some dozen or so domains for various friends, relations and even customers! I have mainly raw html (and css) and javascript and more recently some asp.net c# and VB. I am not aware of the server ever being down! I tend to avoid both customer & technical support wherever possible but have eventually received reasonable responses ... although typically more recently my needs have been somewhat esoteric and more of a coding methodology issue... which one could not expect support for (not at this price).
So all in all my dozen or sites are hosted at great value and the servers continue to provide a reliable home. I have not had any problems with billing (but I have maintained a simple profile with just 2 packages and no bells & whistles.
I would not hesitate to recommend 1&1 for such a use al...

I was with 1&1 for about half a year (http://pmpedia.com). The number of issues that I had with their billing department is unbelievable. My credit card provider changed the number of my card for security reasons, and instead of notifying me that 1&1 couldn't charge me 17$ for hosting services they automatically placed me for collection, which now appear in my credit history. Can you imagine being in collection for 17$??!! I tried calling their billing department - useless. Moreover I had to pay collection fees for their screw-ups.
But wait, that’s not all – even after I paid everything I couldn’t access my data as my account is permanently locked. No one to talk to and waste of time - takes about 40 min on the phone just to get to the first representative
Also, keep in mind that they change their prices periodically, so there is no guarantee that the teaser fee you subscribed to will be constant throughout your contract with them

1And1 has lost us as a customer!
We suffered our second major outage this year and our site has been down a total of more than 50 hours in both January and February. It is obvious that 1and1 cannot adequately support their systems and customers. The 99.99% guaranteed uptime promise is an absolute lie.
I have had horrible experience with technical support. Waiting on phone hold for 30+ minutes, getting comical feedback from people who have no idea what to do except send an "email to the Admin dept", and pitiful slow response to the resolution of our problems. These are completely unacceptable business practices.
Advice: Pay a little more money and get a reliable service if your business Web presence is important to you at all. Our experience has cost us $$$ in lost business revenue.

I was their customer for almost a year and I decided to cancel my account due to some reasons:
1. I found a cheaper web hosting
2. 1and1 customer service sucks. They keep you on hold for at least 30 minutes
3. They do not know how to handle customers.
Before transferring to my new web hosting, I cancelled my account about 3 weeks from my next billing cycle. I called their customer support and verified everything that if I cancel now, should I still be able to access my remaining weeks of my account until it expires. And the person said "yes".
But after confirming my cancellation, I wasn't able to access my account and the technical department told me that once you acknowlege your cancellation, your account is still active but I your account is locked. This means that you cannot access your files anymore.
I don't know what's their problem why they need to lock your account. You already have paid for it and there will be no harm if you cancel the account prior to renewal.

1and1 is a host making dishonest money OFF their customers (i.e. us!)! Do not subscribe with them unless you want to loose money EVEN AFTER you cancel your service with them. They charged me for three months AFTER i canceled their services adapting the bill to fit their accounting date. (I canceled on May 21, they issued a bill for May 20 saying that i canceled one day too late, hence, charging me for THREE months! Outrageous! All other bills were scheduled between the 1st and 5th of each month, therefore I mush have been billed between the 1st and 5th of June). Terrible...
On the tech side, they give an awfully small space to build a website with very limited choice of web pages available. You must subscribe to more features, hence more money in order to have more space and/or choice and I am still not sure that this is indeed more. (Lack of space is particularly evident if one wants to create an album or any sort of visual page).

A terrible host.
Tech support is outsourced and takes 45 minutes to get a live person. Billing support is rude and threatens you.
Here's my story:
I signed up for a 3 month contract a 1&1 plan. Every page I loaded to signup finally kept pushing a "free software package". I finally gave in and note that NO WHERE on the page did it say that I would get locked into a 12 month contract.
When I had enough with the downtime and slow speeds and, gasp, broken links in the control panel, I called billing and said I wanted out and wanted to take advantage of their "MONEY BACK GUARANTEE", by the way, it was day 14. They said I couldn't because of the software package and I asked for proof in the TOS. They refered me to a FAQ page and only there, NOT the TOS or AUP did it say 12 month contract.
I emailed them again about the problem and a tech support person told me to send back the software package, which I did, and that I would get a refund. When the bill came the next month, I go...

5pm Friday: Dedicated Windows server goes down. Saturday: 2hours on hold. Monday: Lots of hold, lots of advisors who (after another 20mins of hold) said the problem needed to be escalated. Tuesday, Wednesday: Same as before, except Linux server also goes down. Thursday: complaints, server re-image (this fixes the linux box), request to speak to someone else leads to phillipino call centre (intl call charges)- again, no ideas.
Friday 6am: new fresh windows server comes online. Resurrection process begins after *160 hours* of downtime for our 8 sites.
No apologies....

If you want to make the BIGGEST mistake of your life, sign up to 1and1. DO NOT GO NEAR 1AND1. This has to be the worst company on the planet. Their products and services sound too good to be true - because that are too good to be true.
This company is built of robbing clients. Poor server uptime, non-existant support. If you call their "24 hour" support, you will be put through to a call centre in the Phillipines where a computer illeterate poorly trained individual will read you answers off their FAQ. If you ask a question that is too hard for them, they will hang up on you, or re-read an irrelevant answer off their FAQ.
They will charge your credit card imaginary amounts and it takes hours on the phone to have these false charges removed.
If you then try to transfer away from them, they will hold your domains hostage, and make it impossible.
1and1 are COMPLETELY useless. Useless customer support, useless billing department, unethical games and tricks to charge you more...

I should have looked on this website first before registering with them, I guess.
I have took a 1 year contract with them, right, but they offer a 90-days satisfaction guarantee, so since I am DEEPLY unsatisfied with them, I wanted to cancel this contract.
HA! .. Try to do it! Calling there and following the phone menu to the cancellation of a contract results in sending you back to their website in the section to cancel a contract.
The problem is that this section doesn't consider the 90 days guarantee so .. You cannot really cancel the contract, or you can, only in 1 year from your registration with them.
Tech support treat you like a d*mb really ... If they don't cancel this contract, I will have to cancel my credit card, to avoid them to pay themselves automatically! Can you believe this ?...

We had our domain name registered with 1and1. We transferred our domain over to APLUS.NET. 1and1 SPITEFULLY turned our next year's fee over to a collection agency to harass us and put a bad mark on our good credit history. Do NOT trust this dishonest business.
Try APLUS.NET for domain name registration, never had a problem with them...

When it come to cancellation, 1and1 won't do it, even I send a request and said that I follow their direction to cancel one of the service, but I still got billing. I refuse to pay for the service I'd like to cancel. 1and1 shut down all my service, including the one I already pay and still under contract for a few more months... I ask them how about just shut down the one that I like to cancel instead since I don't want service. They refuse to do it and kept shutting down all services I have.

1and1 are crooks. I signed up for web site based on very attractive pricing. I paid with CC that had an expiration date before the renewal. When they tried to bill me for the 2nd year, the card was declined. 1and1 suspended the site (unused) and turned the bill over to collection. The collection agency had no trouble tracking me down with the information provided by 1and1. These guys are crooks! DO NOT do business with them........
