Important SEO Terms

SEO - Search Engine Optimization. The art of making your website relevant and important so that it ranks high in the search results for a particular word.

PR : PageRank (PR) is a numerical value which represents the popularity of a website. This is status given to websites by google.com

SERPs - Search Engine Results Pages, pages returned with results when you search.

Indexing : The process by which a Search Engine spider visits your web page and collects information about it.

Title Tag : The tag that defines the title of the web page. It is probably the most important page element that influences the ranking of a page.

Meta tag : A meta tag is an element of HTML that often describes the contents of a Web page, and is placed near the beginning of the page’s source code. Search engines use information provided in a meta tags to index pages by subject.

Anchor Text : Anchor text refers to the text that composes a link to another web page or resource.

Cloaking : Cloaking is a system of delivering custom content to a spider but hiding the code and / or content from a user. Cloaking can be a dangerous method of getting listed in the search engines and may not be recommended.

CPC : CPC or Cost per Click advertising means you will pay a certain price every time your banner ad is clicked by a user, regardless of how many times it is displayed.

CPM : CPM means Cost Per Thousand impressions. It is the price paid by an advertiser for a web site displaying their banner ad a thousand times.

Keyword / Keyphrase : A word or phrase that you type in when you are searching for information in the search engines. Also called ‘search terms’.

Keyword density : Keyword density calculates the percentage of keyword words and phrases compared to the total of words in your web page body.

Keyword Stuffing : Keyword stuffing is considered to be a unethical Search engine optimization (SEO) technique. It is the needless repetition of a keyword or keyword phrase in order to get higher ranking on search engines and this keyword or keyphrase may or may not be visible to human visitors.

Search Engine Spam : In the search engine world, spam is defined as the manipulation of a web page to give it an artificial boost in the search engine rankings.

Organic Listings - Organic listings are the non-paid search results lists seen in search engines, as opposed to paid or sponsored listings.

Robots.txt - Robots.txt is a text file placed in a websites root directory and linked in the html code. It allows for SEO’s to control the actions of search engine spiders on the site or even deny them access.

Webmaster - A person responsible for the management of a particular website.
